Five Pillars of Civic Investment

Our grantmaking concentrates on five interconnected program areas that together build stronger, more engaged, and more resilient communities across the greater Philadelphia region. Each pillar reflects the Foundation's core conviction that civic participation and neighborhood vitality are mutually reinforcing forces.

🏛

Civic Education

We fund non-partisan civic education programs in schools and community settings that teach democratic participation, media literacy, constitutional principles, and voter engagement. Our civic education grants have reached over 28,000 students and residents since 2002, partnering with school districts, libraries, and community organizations to build an informed and active citizenry.

Youth Leadership

Our Youth Civic Leaders Fellowship and after-school enrichment grants develop the next generation of civic-minded leaders. Through mentorship pairings, civic internship placements, and leadership development workshops, we have supported over 1,200 young Philadelphians in building the skills and confidence to serve their communities. Alumni have gone on to careers in public service, education, law, and community organizing.

Arts & Culture

Our micro-grants and program funding support public art installations, community performance series, youth arts workshops, and cultural festivals that bring diverse neighbors into shared creative spaces. We have funded over 85 arts projects reaching more than 18,000 participants since 2005.

What Our Partners Say

“The Abele Family Foundation's Neighborhood Catalyst Grant was transformative for our commercial corridor work in Germantown. Beyond the funding, their team provided invaluable strategic guidance that helped us leverage an additional $340,000 in matching funds from the City and LISC. They understand that neighborhood revitalization must be community-driven to be sustainable.”

Denise Cartwright-Harmon Executive Director, Germantown United CDC

“As a Youth Civic Leaders Fellow, I was placed at a City Council office where I helped coordinate constituent services and community engagement events. That experience confirmed my calling to public service. I am now in my second year of law school with a focus on community development law, and I trace it directly back to the Foundation's investment in my development.”

Marcus J. Okafor AFF Youth Fellow, Cohort IX (2021)

“The Capacity Building Partnership gave our young organization the structural foundation we needed to grow responsibly. The strategic planning process, board development workshops, and financial management training were exactly what we needed at that stage. Two years later, our annual budget has tripled and we serve four times as many families.”

Priya Venkatesh Founder, Southwest Philadelphia Literacy Collective
